We are delighted that long time supporter Margaret Payne chose us along with NHS Charities, the Highland Health Board Endowment Fund and the RNLI for her Suilven-on-the-stairs Challenge.

Margaret started on Easter Sunday and completed her 282nd and final climb of the stairs to reach the 2,398 ft height of Suilven on 23rd June. Her 10-week marathon challenge has raised over £420,000 for the four charities; over £140,000 of this will come to Highland Hospice.

    Margaret's Story

Even though she’s stayed safely at home, 90-year-old Margaret Payne was on a mission to reach the peak of Suilven!

For 10 weeks between Easter Sunday and 23rd June 2020, Margaret climbed her staircase several times every day to reach 2,398 ft it takes to ascend to the summit of this iconic Highland mountain. And she did it all to raise funds for NHS Charities Together, NHS Highland, RNLI and Highland Hospice.

It’s was 76 years since Margaret first scaled Suilven with her sister - and that experience was so memorable she wanted to recreate it with her epic indoor trek! She said: “I have now lived in the Highlands for over 40 years and I would like to raise funds to support the NHS in particular at this difficult time”.

We are delighted to have had Margaret's support, especially as her late husband James was such a fantastic ambassador for Highland Hospice. Their daughter Nicky had travelled all the way from New Zealand for her father's memorial service, and was caught in lockdown with her mum - she became her biggest cheer leader!
