By the River Café, located on the banks of the River Ness in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is located on the grounds of the Highland Hospice, which was founded in 1988 by two nurses. The hospice, the only one in the Inverness region, has just 12 beds and social workers visit patients at home and also support their families. The café was born to support the hospice. All workers are volunteers.

Alice, a waiter at the café, lost her husband to cancer several years ago. She started volunteering to give back to the hospice that cared and supported him during his final stages of life.

At the café, hospice chefs will prepare traditional Empire biscuits, gluten free scones and soups. Although it is a small café, it is supported by many customers, including tourists. TripAdvisor has the highest rating.
