By the River Café at Highland Hospice is a much-loved spot offering delicious lunches, home baking, and light snacks—all freshly prepared by our Hospice Kitchen. Open Monday to Saturday, the café warmly welcomes patients, visitors, staff, volunteers, and members of the public. Operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, it provides a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Importantly, the café also plays a vital role in fundraising, helping to support the essential services we provide to our clients.
Main responsibilities and suggested activities
• Deliver excellent customer service and uphold high standards of food hygiene for all café visitors
• Serve a variety of freshly prepared lunches, home baking, and light snacks
• Operate the electronic till system accurately and efficiently
• Use the touchscreen coffee machine to prepare hot beverages
• Maintain a clean and welcoming environment by clearing tables and keeping the café tidy
Skills / attributes and/or qualification(s) required
We kindly ask our volunteers to commit to:
One weekday shift per week
One Saturday shift per month
There is also the opportunity to take on ad hoc shifts, offering extra flexibility for those who wish to contribute more time when available.
Shift times: Monday - Friday 9.30am - 1pm and 1pm - 4.30pm and Saturday 11am - 3.30pm - 2 volunteers on each shift.
• Mandatory training
• Strong customer service skills with a warm, approachable manner
• A friendly, outgoing personality and a positive attitude
• Good physical stamina, as the role involves extended periods of walking and standing
• Confidence and accuracy when handling cash and operating the till
