Aim or goal of position

Works alongside the nursing team within the Inpatient Unit to deliver care to patients.  On occasion, volunteers may be asked to assist with other general duties.

Main responsibilities and suggested activities

Work alongside the contracted nursing team in the delivery of care which may include:

  • Assisting with nursing duties as individual skills allow
  • Assisting with personal care as directed by nurse
  • Assisting patients to mobilise with the physiotherapist or nursing team
  • Assisting patients with diet
  • Escorting independent patients to clinic appointments

With guidance from the Occupational Therapist, encourage and assist patients to participate in social and therapeutic activities which may also include:

  • Where appropriate, sitting with patients in the last stages of their illness
  • Where appropriate, assisting with last offices

Assist housekeeping team with general duties which may include:

  • Assisting the Housekeeping Team with laundry duties
  • Maintaining tidiness of Inpatient Unit

Skills / attributes and/or qualification(s) required

  • Previous nursing or professional carer experience is essential
  • Awareness and understanding of the needs of individual patients is essential
  • Kindness, care and consideration to patients and their carers is essential
  • Excellent communication skills are essential
  • A good level of fitness is desirable
  • Volunteers must be aged 18 and over

Estimated hours

9.30am – 1.00pm; Monday – Sunday
