The Drifters Create a Magic Moment for Highland Hospice Patient

9 October 2013

Sould legends The Drifters made one of our patients' wish come true last week by turning up to sing at his bedside.

Patient Jim Shepherd had tickets for the band's Eden Court show but he was too ill to attend.  When the singers came into the ward and stood by Mr Shepherd's bedside, he initially mistook them for doctors and started telling them his medical history.

Jim, 63, was astounded when he realised The Drifters had taken their show to him!

He said, \"They delivered such a charming little concert for everyone in the Unit.  It was absolutely \"Wow!\"

The performers sang well known tracks including 'Saturday Night at the Movies' and 'You're More Than a Number in My Little Black Book'.

Lead vocalist Michael Williams said it was a very touchign tribute.  He added, \"We had the nurses coming in and his little grand-daughter was there and everyone had big smiles - but we had the biggest smiles just to see them so happy.  We felt kind of emotional about it.  He was in our thoughts when we did our show.\"

The Drifters performed at Eden Court last Thursday (October 3rd) as part of a 60th anniversary world tour.  The bedside visit was organised by our In Patient Unit staff.  Jim's family were present for the occasion.

Michael Williams said, \"The fellows and I think this  is what it's all about - using our celebrity to get to the people that matter.\"

We think the band are true superstars and would like to thank them very much for making our patient so happy.
