Aim or goal of position

Ness Islands Railway is a charming miniature railway featuring 7¼-inch gauge trains. Guide customers to climb aboard one of our delightful locomotives for a scenic journey spanning over half a mile—an experience sure to enchant both children and adults. After their ride, they can stop by our kiosk to enjoy a selection of cold drinks and tasty snacks. 

Main responsibilities and suggested activities

• Mandatory Training: Moving and Handling and Fire Awareness

• Deliver exceptional customer service to all visitors of the railway.

• Operate the kiosk, selling cold drinks and snacks to customers.

• Collect ticket fares from passengers in a friendly and efficient manner.

• Handle cash transactions and operate both the till and card payment machine.

• Follow opening and closing procedures, including end-of-day cashing up.

• Adhere to organisational guidelines to ensure the smooth and safe running of the railway.

• Ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and visitors at both the train and station areas.

• Assist with general maintenance tasks such as landscaping, cleaning, and other upkeep duties.

 

Opening Schedule – Ness Islands Railway

Easter Holidays: Open daily for the full two-week holiday period.

Spring to Summer: Open weekends only until the start of the school summer holidays.

Summer Holidays: Open 7 days a week throughout the school summer break.

Late Summer to Autumn: Open weekends only until the October school holidays.

End of Season: Closes after the October school holidays.

 

Skills / attributes and/or qualification(s) required

• A strong commitment to providing outstanding customer service is essential.

• A friendly, approachable, and outgoing personality is essential.

• Confidence in handling money is essential, as volunteers are expected to perform all operational duties outlined in the role description.

• Good problem-solving skills are beneficial and would support day-to-day tasks.

• A willingness to learn how to operate and maintain locomotives and railway tracks is desirable, though not required.

• Basic mechanical or engineering knowledge is desirable but not essential.

 

Volunteer Shift times: 

Full day shift               10:30-16:30

Half day shifts: Mornings   10:30-13:30

               Afternoons   13:30-16:30

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday - Weather permitting: 11am - 4pm
